Feed Pelleting Improvement Strategy
Improving the quality of pellets through feed formulation and pelleting machine settings does not show a maximum result, the use of pellet binder is worthed
In broiler, quality of pellets or feed has a direct effect on the production performance. A livestock nutrition expert from Livestock Research Center, Ciawi, Bogor, Budi Tangendjaja showed research data that compared the performance of broiler in relation with a variety of feed forms (100% meal, 20% meal, 40% meal, 60% meal and 0% meal).
The result showed that the less meal in feed composition, the better the growth and feed conversion of broilers. This indicates that in broiler, pellet-shaped feed is better than meal form and pellet quality determines performance.
Therefore, Budi said, the quality of pellets for broilers should be made as good as possible. The quality level of pellets is expressed in PDI (Pellet Durability Index). “Some say PDI 93% is good, but some others say it is not enough. The point is it should not be so high that the pellet is hard to digest,” he suggested.
Budi said that the basic methods used to improve the quality of pellets are through feed formulation and the machine settings (pelleting) such as adjusting the roller, die (part of a pelleting machine with holes on the surface where pellets come out), steam (steam regulator), and temperature. However, if improving the quality of pellets through feed formulation and pelleting machine settings does not show a maximum result, the use of pellet binder (the product added to the feed ingredients to improve the quality of pellets) is worth considering.
Indeed, according to Budi, pellet binder is not new, and in Indonesia this product has been around since the 1990s. There are a number of product types. Some are made of lignin and cellulose derived from wood and clay. The uses also vary. Some claim only 2 kg, 5 kg, and so on.
Because there are various pellet binder products, Budi said, the efficacy and efficiency are the right criterion to select the product. The first thing to prove is whether the pellet binder can work and is effective in improving the quality of pellets. Then see how much it is used in a ton of feed, as this will affect economically.
Viewed from the efficiency, Budi observed that the electricity cost is quite high in the process of making pellet feed. Therefore, it is important to note whether the pellet binder used will reduce the cost of electricity or not. “So, choose pellet binder which can improve the quality of pellets, which is efficient in electricity cost, and which gives excellent performance in broilers,” he concluded.
